Our Mission, and the Science Behind It
Every claim here was researched and then fact-checked against a simple test: if a skeptical journalist looked into it, they could not fairly call it misleading. Where the honest finding is weaker than the popular version, we state the weaker one. Associations are called associations, not proof of cause.
1. Time in nature is linked to children's wellbeing
Children and adolescents who feel more connected to nature tend to report higher wellbeing. The first meta-analysis in this age group (2024) pooled 12 studies with about 30,000 participants aged 4 to 18 and found a significant positive correlation, broadly comparable to adults. In a nationwide Danish study of about 943,000 people, those with the least green space around their childhood home had up to a 55% higher risk of a psychiatric disorder later in life, in a dose-response pattern that held after adjusting for income, urbanization, and family history. 2. And children are getting less of it
Ecologists describe a fading of everyday contact with nature, the "extinction of experience," in a self-reinforcing cycle: less contact lowers interest, which lowers contact further. National time-use data indicate American children's outdoor and unstructured play has declined over recent decades. The exact magnitude is uncertain and easy to overstate, so we attach no specific percentage. Hofferth, electronic International Journal of Time Use Research, 2009. eijtur.org
Screen media is now routine in early childhood: U.S. children aged 0 to 8 average about two and a half hours a day. Total screen time has stayed relatively steady since 2011; what has grown is online video's share and young children's ownership of personal devices. 3. What screen media can and cannot do
Fast, ready-made imagery leaves a child little room to form pictures of their own. Media researchers call this the visualization hypothesis: vivid rapid visuals supply the images, so children practice generating fewer of their own; comparative studies find radio stories elicit more novel ideas than the same stories on television, and reviews conclude the weight of evidence suggests heavy viewing dampens creative imagination (decisive causal proof is lacking, and we say so). Our design runs the other way on purpose: soft watercolor suggestion instead of loud detail, slow pacing, and quiet pauses that leave room for imagination. Small controlled classroom studies suggest that well-chosen nature programming can measurably improve children's environmental attitudes and sensitivity. Young children form genuine one-sided bonds with familiar on-screen educators, and research links these bonds to stronger engagement and better learning. The direct evidence comes from general educational media, not nature shows specifically, so it is a credible mechanism, not a guarantee. But a screen is a doorway, not a substitute. When researchers tested the famous "Blue Planet II effect" in a controlled experiment, watching the documentary raised what viewers knew but did not change what they did. 4. Where we stand on screens
The World Health Organization (2019) recommends no more than one hour of sedentary screen time a day for ages 2 to 4, and none under 2, with "less is better." The American Academy of Pediatrics increasingly emphasizes that what a child watches, and whether an adult watches with them and helps connect it to the real world, matters as much as raw totals. We make screen content, and we are honest about that. Our answer is not to pretend screens are harmless, but to make an episode a child watches count: calm, real, factually careful, and pointed back toward the world outside the window.
